Background of the Study
Religious conflicts have remained a significant cause of social unrest and instability in many parts of Nigeria. Plateau State, located in the central region of Nigeria, has been particularly affected by religious clashes, especially in Jos North Local Government Area (LGA). Jos, known for its ethnic and religious diversity, has seen recurrent violent conflicts between the Christian and Muslim communities. These conflicts are often fueled by a combination of historical, political, and economic factors, leading to a cycle of violence and distrust between the groups (Ahmed & Bello, 2024). The impact of these religious conflicts extends beyond the immediate loss of lives and property, affecting intergroup relations and creating long-term divisions in the community.
The socio-political landscape of Jos North has been shaped by a complex interplay of religious identity, competition for resources, and political manipulation. Religious conflicts in Jos North have not only undermined peaceful coexistence but also hindered social and economic development in the region. Despite efforts by the government, NGOs, and community leaders to mediate peace and promote intergroup dialogue, the underlying causes of the conflicts remain largely unresolved. The study seeks to assess the nature and extent of religious conflicts in Jos North LGA and their broader implications on intergroup relations. It will also evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence and reducing tensions between religious communities.
Statement of the Problem
Religious conflicts in Jos North LGA have led to deepening divisions between Christian and Muslim communities, creating an environment of fear, suspicion, and hostility. These tensions have negatively affected intergroup relations, making it difficult for members of different religious groups to collaborate or live peacefully. The persistent nature of these conflicts has also undermined efforts at fostering social cohesion and development in the region (Ali, 2025). While various government and civil society organizations have attempted to intervene and mediate peace, their efforts have not yielded lasting solutions. The problem of unresolved religious conflicts continues to hinder the ability of local communities to build trust and engage in cooperative activities.
This study aims to investigate the relationship between religious conflicts and intergroup relations in Jos North LGA. It will examine the social, economic, and political impacts of these conflicts on both Christian and Muslim communities, while also exploring the effectiveness of government and non-governmental interventions in managing the tensions and fostering peaceful cohabitation.

To assess the impact of religious conflicts on intergroup relations in Jos North LGA.
To evaluate the role of government and community-based interventions in managing religious conflicts in Jos North LGA.
To identify strategies for promoting peaceful coexistence and improving intergroup relations in Jos North LGA.
Research Questions

What role have government and community-based interventions played in mitigating religious conflicts in Jos North LGA?
What strategies can be implemented to improve intergroup relations and foster peaceful coexistence in Jos North LGA?
Research Hypotheses
Religious conflicts in Jos North LGA have significantly impaired intergroup relations between Christian and Muslim communities.
Government and community-based interventions have not been effective in resolving religious conflicts in Jos North LGA.
Implementing interfaith dialogue and reconciliation programs will improve intergroup relations and reduce religious conflicts in Jos North LGA.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is focused on Jos North LGA, Plateau State, and examines religious conflicts and their effects on intergroup relations between 2010 and 2025. The study is limited by the difficulty of gathering data due to the sensitive nature of the subject matter and ongoing tensions between religious communities. Additionally, the findings may not be generalized to other parts of Nigeria with different religious dynamics.
